Doing some inventory of our cellar and g

Hello there! My name is Kori, well actually its Korina, but I've never been too fond of that name. I live in Boring, Oregon (yes that's right, BORING, its a real place) on just under 2 acres with my husband and 3 girls.

I grew up nearby in a small, cookie cutter house in a pavement lined neighborhood and even as a kid I knew I wanted to get away from the chaos. I felt suffocated. I needed out. I moved to Fairbanks, Alaska for college and there my passion for living off the land, being self sufficient and my mind's picture of "homesteading" grew. But I'm not a fan of extreme cold so back home we came to create our own piece of the dream in a way that was sustainable for us.

Sure, I don't have the hundreds of acres some do. But guess what? You don't need it! You just have to use your space to its upmost potential. I drive up and see fruit trees, apple, cherry, peach, pear, plum and long vines of kiwi. Chickens, ducks and the occasional bossy peacock block our driveway and greet my kids off the bus. Bees from our many hives are buzzing off the colorful flowers planted in every nook and cranny, dispersed with edible plants and berry bushes.

We grow most of our own food, raise meat chickens and pigs, barter for foods we aren't able to grow and what we have an abundance of I use my love of canning and preserving and sell jams and pickled things at local farmers markets.

We chose to step away from the rat race of today's world and step back into a time when things were simpler. When you worked hard, with your hands deep in the dirt, and knew exactly where your food came from. We both still work outside the home, stressful jobs in the medical field where we see far too many people at life's end with regrets because there was never enough time or money. Later, we all think. Later, life will slow down. Well I'm not waiting on my dream and neither should you.

I loved the book the Secret Garden as a kid and I'm working to transform my life and our home into our own magical world. I hope by following along you can be inspired to start your own timeless sanctuary as well.
