MEET THE ANIMALS
On our farm you will find chickens, ducks, peafowl and for most of the year 2 or 3 snorting cheeky piggies.
Our chickens are various breeds, many we have had for up to 7 years, happily living out their retirement here. We focus mainly on Ancona ducks due to their gentle nature and as their numbers are limited in the US.
You can hear our 2 peahens and 2 peacocks from blocks away. Why do we have them? Why not! They are majestic and I could look at the males strutting their stuff all day long. Plus the males drop their feathers each fall and our girls love running around the fields on a feather hunt!
We raise a couple pigs a year, one for our family and others for sale. They are all named and treated as pets throughout their life. They love donuts!
APIARY
We love bees! They might be my favorite part of the farm. Our back field holds 15 hives, all caught in the wild by catching swarms or rescued from downed trees. We feel they are more resilient in our wet Oregon weather and have strong genetics. Check out our tree stump hive that we were able to preserve in their natural home, its simply amazing. I could sit near a hive all day and watch them come and go with various colored pollen on their legs.
The ORCHARD
The Orchard- Spread around the property are over 15 fruit trees. 7 kinds of apples, Asian pears, bosc pears, bartlett pears, bing and rainier cherries, plums, peaches and pluots. Don't forget various berries; blueberries, strawberries, marionberries, boysenberries, loganberries, kiwi and currants.
THE GARDEN
Growing our own food is the best part about homesteading. Grown from seeds, our large garden produces enough food to last us the year with hundreds of pounds canned for the off season. You name it and I probably preserve it. I know exactly what is in all the food we produce and that makes me feel good about feeding my family. I'm forever gradful for growing up with strong women who learned to preserve and never waste because there may come a day when you don't have money to run to the store for supper. Extra produce is grown for our animals and to make preserves and pickles for market.
